Here's a useful Byfield Bowls Club guide to the Match Captain's Role (what needs to be done and when)
Two weeks before the Match:
- Ask members either by what’s app or email if they are interested in playing.
One week before:
- Contact the opposing club's Captain to confirm that the game is to be played at the venue on our Fixture List (either home or away), ascertain how many players they will have and agree on the format of the match (number of rinks). Byfield members prefer triples. It may be necessary to lend or borrow a player to make up the numbers.
- Advise Byfield members who has a place in the team.
- For away matches ensure everyone is clear that anyone either providing or needing a lift will meet in the club car park in time to arrive at the venue at least 15 minutes before the start time. As Captain it’s probably advisable to arrive a little earlier.
Prior to the Match:
- Complete the left-hand side of the score cards with Byfield players’ names and positions, and take these with their holders and pens from the club house ready to meet with the opposing Captain and complete with the opposing team’s names.
- Delegate some of the “on the day jobs” (as below) to other players for home matches.
- For home matches buy a maximum of three raffle prizes.
- For all matches buy four scratch cards - 3 for our winning rink (if there is one) and one for the opposing Captain.
- Ensure someone is able to manage the bar for after match drinks.
On the day for Home games:
- Delegate some of the tasks to other team members.
- Arrive at least half an hour before the match is due to start as opposing players can arrive half an hour beforehand.
- Set up appropriate number of rinks with 2 x mats, a jack, score stand, bowls pushers x 2, baton x 2, 2 sets of ditch markers (one red and one white), long tape measure. (kept near the first aid box in the downstairs hallway)
- Set up appropriate number of tables upstairs with wooden rink numbers, refreshments with a selection of light snacks and a pot to collect raffle money. (£1 per player - both teams)
- Lay out the laminated raffle tickets on a table ready for the draw alongside the three prizes.
- Meet with the opposing Captain and complete the names and positions on the score cards.
- At the start time go to the green and welcome the opposing team Captain and players, advise everyone of the number of ends to be played, that it is visitors’ mat with 1 off the first two ends and invite the away Captain to name their first rink players and continue naming players and distributing score cards to Skips.
After the Match:
- As with all home players, the Captain offers the opposing Captain a drink from the bar.
- Collect the score cards, match fees and raffle money from each table. Total the money and record on the Match Income and Expenses Sheet and place in the safe.
- Once everyone has partaken of refreshments and had an opportunity to chat, both Captains (starting with the home Captain) will make a brief speech and announce the overall score as well as toast the other Club. The away team will probably do likewise.
- Soon after this the raffle is drawn using the laminated cards.
- When players begin to leave ensure that everything is left neat and tidy, lights are switched off and the place is locked up safely.
